Practice Philosophy

Dr. Eon Shin possesses a deep enthusiasm for the practice of hand surgery, not only for the concrete, three-dimensional thinking needed to understand the upper extremity’s function, but because of the immediacy of the interventions and the capacity to enhance people’s lives in a significant way. Interventions are sometimes as simple as a corticosteroid injection into a tendon sheath. Other patients may need multiple reconstructive surgeries to regain use of a damaged limb. Dr. Shin enjoys being able to help all people at different stages of life and approaches every patient with the utmost dignity, respect, and professionalism.

Educational Background

A Magna Cum Laude graduate from Harvard University with a Bachelor of Arts in Biochemical Sciences, Dr. Eon Shin completed his medical education at some of the most renowned institutions in the United States:

  • Bachelor of Arts - Harvard University
  • Doctor of Medicine - Yale University
  • Residency, Orthopaedic Surgery - UCLA Medical Center
  • Fellowship, Upper Extremity Surgery - Harvard Combined Hand Fellowship

He concluded his medical education with fellowship training in Hand and Upper Extremity Surgery at the prestigious Harvard Combined Hand Fellowship at Brigham & Women’s Hospital, Massachusetts General Hospital, and Boston Children’s Hospital.

Clinical Practice and Research Interests

Dr. Shin is proud to be part of the Philadelphia Hand to Shoulder Center, which focuses exclusively on the care of the upper extremity, including the elbow, forearm, wrist, and hand. His medical interests encompass all pathology in this area of the body. He is especially interested in reconstructive solutions for hand, wrist, and elbow problems, particularly as they relate to traumatic injuries. Dr. Shin also presents nationally at hand surgery meetings on minimally invasive surgical procedures, including wrist/elbow arthroscopy techniques and endoscopic carpal tunnel surgery.

His research interests are varied and include the treatment of trigger finger, fracture injuries, and Dupuytren’s disease. He was the senior author on a recent publication examining the associations between carpal tunnel syndrome and workers’ compensation patients. With our medical knowledge growing rapidly, he enjoys challenging clinical conventions to see whether there is evidence to justify our current thinking and approaches. Dr. Shin has presented his research at national and international hand surgery meetings and has published more than 20 scientific abstracts and over 40 clinical manuscripts.

Academic Awards and Recognition

Dr. Shin has been commended for his clinical work on multiple occasions by Thomas Jefferson University Hospital and St. Mary Medical Center in Langhorne, PA. He has also been named as a “Top Physician” by Philadelphia’s Suburban Magazine and has served as past-president of the Philadelphia Hand Society. He is currently an Associate Professor in Orthopaedic Surgery at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital. He has also served as a chairman and maintains an active academic role each year in the prestigious Philadelphia Hand Surgery and Philadelphia Hand Therapy Symposia.

In addition to his local responsibilities, Dr. Shin participates in numerous educational and advisory committees for the American Society for Surgery of the Hand (ASSH), American Association for Hand Surgery (AAHS), and American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgery (AAOS). Dr. Shin is board certified in Orthopaedic Surgery and earned additional subspecialty certification in Hand Surgery.
