Education
Rowena McBeath M.D., Ph.D. was born and raised in Fairbanks, Alaska. Dr. McBeath moved to the east coast to complete her formal education and graduated Cum Laude from Yale University with a degree in Molecular Biochemistry and Biophysics. As a recipient of Yale’s Henry Fellowship, she studied and received her Master of Philosophy in Molecular Immunology at Cambridge University.
Dr. McBeath then pursued her M.D., and Ph.D. in Cellular and Molecular Medicine, while funded by the NIH Medical Scientist Training Program (MSTP) at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine and obtained both degrees in 2006. Dr. McBeath was then accepted into the Orthopaedic Surgery residency program at Washington University in St. Louis. After finishing residency, she then completed her Hand Surgery Fellowship at Philadelphia Hand to Shoulder Center/Thomas Jefferson University Hospital.
Awards of Interest
Dr. McBeath is the proud recipient of many awards, including: The Richter Fellowship from Yale University; the Bates Fellowship and East Asia Summer Research Fellowship, which enabled her to study at the Institute of Parasitic Disease Research in Shanghai, China; the T.H. Middleton Prize for Outstanding Biological Science Dissertation from Cambridge University; the Nuper Dinesh Thekdi Young Investigator Award from Johns Hopkins University; the Sudler Award in the Arts from Johns Hopkins University; both the OREF Resident Research grant and Clinician Scientist Training Grants; the ASSH Basic Science Research Grant; and the Washington University Orthopaedic Surgery Resident Teaching Award. In addition to the many academic awards Dr. McBeath has received, she is also an accomplished violinist, soloing with a full orchestra at the age of 14, and is fluent in Mandarin Chinese.
Overview: Research and Medical Interests
While Dr. McBeath is an empathetic, patient oriented clinician who treats hands, wrists, arms, and elbows, she also has a passion for research. Specifically, Dr. McBeath's research to date has focused on connective tissue differentiation with the goal of finding applications to hand surgery. Dr. McBeath has shared her research findings through multiple scientific publications and academic presentations. She is the recipient of the NIH GEMSTAR and NIA Beeson Scholar Awards. Dr. McBeath continues her basic science research concurrently with her clinical practice at the Philadelphia Hand to Shoulder Center, specializing in upper extremity surgery including arthroscopy, arthroplasty, tendon transfers and repairs, fracture fixation, joint replacement, replantation and trauma. Like her partners at The Hand Center, Dr. McBeath has a strong commitment to excellence and treating her patients with personable and respectful care.
